The Fool Proof Plan for Simplifying Your Next Tile Project

Would you believe that a bathroom remodel in Salem, Oregon now costs, on average, a whopping $16,000 – $27,000!

Having worked with hundreds of home owners over the years we have learned a few things from our budget savvy customers and from experience about saving money on a remodel without sacrificing quality.

Whether its selecting a design that adds cost or just choosing the wrong materials – it can really be overwhelming to know where to start when planning a bathroom remodel, or any tiling project for that matter, and not wanting to break the bank.

Here are a few tips that will help you get unstuck and move forward with your plans.

Follow These 9 Steps to a Seamless Bathroom Remodel

1. Plan out your design – are you moving things around?

Are you moving a toilet, shower or a vanity? Remember, any moving of plumbing is costly. If moving plumbing has to happen then download a home design app that lets you move things around and see exactly how things will look. We like Home Design 3-D Gold. You can visually see things from all angles so you can avoid costly or ugly mistakes. The other nice thing about this app is that you can show it to your contractor so they can see exactly what you expect.

2. Get your budget in order.

Knowing exactly how much you want to spend is important. This will help you know how much you can spend on each item. Do remember though that the older your home is the more likely something will come up that will add cost – it’s just a given. To alleviate the stress that this can add, calculate it in. Set aside a buffer for the unexpected curve balls.

3. Get at least 2 or even 3 bids.

Don’t just hire the cheapest bid. The cheapest contractor may not be as experienced. Ask questions. Ask for references and pictures. Find out how long they have been doing tile. Are they license, bonded and insured? Call construction contractors board and find out if they have any dings on file. This is especially important if you are having a new shower installed. You don’t want to deal with a leaky shower in a couple years because you didn’t do your due diligence.

4. Think about functionality not just beauty.

I know – duh! You wouldn’t believe how many people what to squeeze all kinds of things into a tiny bathroom because they think it will be pretty. The reality is that if you’re bumping your elbow on the sink every time you take a shower you will not be happy. Think about comfort, flow, safety, accessibility. This is where the design app really come in handy because you are able to see how close the sink is to the shower etc.

5. Get the proper permits.

I can’t tell you how often we get customers that want to save money by not getting a permit. It’s just not worth it on so many levels and it’s illegal. Not all bathrooms remodels in Salem Oregon require a permit but some will. If you are moving plumbing or electrical than you will likely have to pull a permit. It’s really not that expensive and worth the peace of mind.

6. Stick with timeless design and style.

If you go crazy with trendy ideas just know that in 10 years your bathroom will look out of date. If that trendy style is just “you” and your fine redoing it in 10 years then go for it! But, if you want this to be a bathroom that will stay current for many, many years to come then stay neutral in style and stay away from bold colors or textures in your tile choice.

7. Shop around for your tile.

There is literally thousands of options for tile out there. In Salem we recommend 3 places – Lowe’s, Home Depot or Daltile. Some people like

8. Think about timing.

Contractors are always more busy in the summer. Often that means you are going to pay more. So, try to think about the slow times for contractors and schedule your project then. For many contractors that is between Christmas and Taxes.Look to the future.

9.  Look to the future.

Thinking about a zero threshold or sill-less shower now can save you headaches in the future. It’s not just practical because anything can happen, but, for the first time ever having a wheelchair accessible shower can increase the value of your home. Design wise it doesn’t need to look commercial either. Zero clearance showers, if done right can look very spa-like.
